West-Eastern Divan Orchestra
Zubin Mehta, conductor
More than a quarter of a century ago, in 1999, Daniel Barenboim, together with the late Palestinian literary scholar Edward Said, founded an orchestra with the aim of fostering dialogue between the diverse cultures of the Middle East through the experience of making music together and living together. They named the orchestra after Goethe's poetry collection “West-östlicher Divan“ (West-Eastern Divan), a pivotal work in the development of the concept of world culture. On February 22, Zubin Mehta, a close friend of Barenboim and a long-time mentor and artistic collaborator of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, will conduct the orchestra in the Musikverein's Great Hall. The three masterpieces on the program—Beethoven's “Leonore“ Overture No. 3 and Eighth Symphony, as well as Tchaikovsky's Fourth—are a musical expression of a powerful commitment to hope and humanity.
